ABOUT OPTIMO:

Optimo started in 1997, though Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes had each been DJing separately for ten years. Both had started out playing different music – Twitch – electro, noisy rock and the eighties New York punk funk of Liquid Liquid (from who they borrowed their name) and Wilkes reggae, funk and jazz. Then techno came along and Twitch co founded Scotland’s first techno club, Pure, which ran for ten years, became legendary, was the first club in Europe to book Jeff Mills, Green Velvet and Richie Hawtin. The club also spawned thee labels which released music from amongst others Coil, Chris and Cosey, Jimi Tenor and Orlando Voorn.

In 1997 they founded the clubnight Optimo as a reaction to 4/4 techno all night long. Anything goes was the philosophy and the club night proved to be a hit. “I didn’t care whether it would work or not, or whether anyone would go, it was just something I had to do,” says Twitch. “I love DJing with all my heart but at this point I was so bored with seamless mixing – it was all just too obvious, too predictable and too easy – that I had to do something to preserve my (in)sanity.”

Don’t expect easy club hits at a night at Optimo, depending on the duo’s mood, the sound will veer from sleazy funk to post punk, electro, 50′s swing and anything inbetween. According to their bio, “Serious DJs would come and watch in horror while several times, seasoned trainspotters would come up to Twitch and tell him ‘You’ve lost the plot’ or ‘You can’t play this in the Sub Club – it’s sacrielige!’ or ‘But… you started Pure, how can you do this?’. People would get really angry about it which of course only fuelled the flames!”

These days Optimo is taking the sound to the world with dates across Europe, America and Japan. And while Twitch and Wilkes remain the residents, each week Glasgow is treated to Optimo guests, who have included the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Atom Heart, Luciano, Four Tet and Justus Kohncke.

ABOUT LEGOWELT:

Legowelt = the name under which Danny Wolfers releases most of his music. What Music you might ask??? Well a hybrid form of slam jack The Hague electronix combined with deep chicago trax, obscure & romantic ghetto technofunk, EuroHorror Soundtracks and lots -a- more! You can’t quite pigeonhole it but it sure as hell slams the pit!

Already more then 10 years in the business Legowelt has released a dozen or so projects on various formats, most of them on good ol’ vinyl released on homebase Bunker records, The Hague’s legendary pioneering electronic music label. Sometimes these tracks spin out of the obscurity like an asteroid from a spacebelt and fly straight into the charts; such an event happened with ‘Disco Rout’ which was voted track of the year 2002 by the acclaimed german Groove magazine.

Legowelt began producing music in the early 90ies when the adolescent schoolboy came in sporadic contact with the sounds of Detroit’s Underground Resistance, Model 500, Blake Baxter and Chicago heroes such as Farley Jackmaster Funk, Armando Gallop and mr.Fingers. Later on this palette of influences grew with early Mu-Ziq, Aphex Twin, Drexciya, various stuff from The Irdial Discs label and virtually every type of freaked deep music he could get his hands on.

But nothing had quite the influence of when he first heard a band called ‘Unit Moebius’ on the radio. A punky palette of RAW freaked out Lo-fi chicago trax and deep detroit jams made with machines which were found next to the garbage can. Shocked in awe he heard that this music came out of The Hague, Holland, the very same city he lived in! Put on the right track by this fact he stumbled into the Bunker Records office and discoverd a world of contemporary autistic freaked music lovers who looked beyond all the bland house and dance music that ruled the media and clubs. Musical mentors such as IF and Melvin White (aka pametex) lectured him with even more unknown sounds such as early electro and the obscure pre-1983 Italian disco which production secrets were closely studied. In 1998 Bunker released the first vinyl of Legowelt : Pimpshifter, a 6 track mingled Italo Chicago combi which became an instant cult hit with tracks such as ‘Sturmvogel’ and ‘Total Pussy Control’.

Apart from producing Legowelt has been playing live all over the world for the last 10 years. A lot of time together with Orgue Electronique and the infamous Bunker Team.

FRIDAY JULY 8th 2011

ABOUT JOAKIM:

Joakim is hard to pin down: part club music, part jazz, part electronic experimentalism.

One of France’s foremost electronic musicians, Joakm has a background in classical music, US & UK indie rock and jazz. He discovered electronic music after a schoolfriend left his synthetiser in Joakim’s room, later latching onto indie and electronic labels such as Warp and Mo Wax. His first album ‘Tiger Sushi’ was ambient electro-jazz, before he moved onto electronics with ‘Fantômes’ [2003], and later ‘Monsters and Silly Songs’ [2007], on which he combines post-rock, disco, electronics and, well, silly songs. “Making a pure dance album would almost be like composing an album entirely in F major,” says Joakim. “I jump from one idea to the next. I simply have to try everything and see where it leads.”

Joakim runs the Tigersushi label, releases a broad spectrum of music including Maurice Fulton, E.S.G, Poni Hoax and Metro Area. Joakim does live se DJs and he’s also a remixer; he’s recut tunes from Tiga, Air and Antena’s ‘Camino Del Sol’ – the latter of which was one of the biggest club tunes of 2006. Finally, he also has a live band, Joakim and the Ectoplasmic Band, on which he plays machines, keyboards, guitars and sings. Fingers in many pies then.

ABOUT DANIEL WANG:

Born in Northern California, Daniel Wang spent 8 years of his childhood in Taiwan, returned to California for high school, and attended university in New York and Chicago. Instead of finishing his papers, however, he ran out to underground clubs and danced all night to early house music and disco classics, befriending and learning from a few old-school voguers and DJ’s along the way.
Dissatisfied with the increasingly unmusical soundtrack of modern nightlife, Danny started Balihu Records in 1993. The first release became a cult success. Danny moved back to NYC and eventually found a job at Dr. Sound Music Store, where he delved deeply into vintage production gear and synths, including the Theremin.
Balihu put out a range of unusual tracks from 1994 to 2000 in the spirit of Philly and Italo Disco, and Wang began producing for the Environ label in 1997. In the past years, he has performed around the world, and his originality is gradually being recognized.
